"You still need to do a DNS request, how do you do it anonymously? Use onion routing? SSL?"

Making your comp say "Hey which IP has google.com" is not illegal, and again, there are multiple ways around this.

"Don’t be fooled you can be tracked via a tor, papers have been written showing how to determine entrance and exit node."

I'm sure there are, and it normally involves a compromised exit node - now to insist that all Exit nodes are compromised is just plain silly and to assume that a compromised node will remain on the Tor node list for any good amount of time without being blacklisted is also foolish.

"SSL can be intercepted and as far as tunneling your DNS via SSL, with the tools the feds have man in the middle attacks are easy. Cracking the cert… the have the PC power to do that… but even easier is to issue a fake cert and reroute the request to the Cert authority to validate the fake cert."

Again only if the exit node is compromised (again, a good hacker/tech savvy person can check for this), or if I have a keylogger on my machine.

The rest of the post I am taking your comments from all have to do with someone performing a MITM attack with a compromised exit node - this is old news for the Tor network and has nothing to do with BitCoin. I can easily set my exit node to aa trusted exit node and rid myself of all these issues you described.

But really, I'm always taken back to - if I perform a BitCoin purchase from a compromised network as I said in a earlier post, it really doesn't matter if they find the original source...I remain anonymous.

Also the comment: "You give me a scenario were you think you are anonymous, I can give you a way a network administrator, with complete control over your network, which the Feds have or can achieve, can intercept your data and track you."

You obviously just don't understand how Tor works, which is ok...but when others are trying to tell you how it works you should listen.

With Tor I can encrypt all network packets from my machine to my ISP, they will see ONLY encrypted network traffic if Tor is setup properly since the traffic is encrypted on my end first and no one but me has admin over my network - I've been in IT for 10 years, I do professional penetration tests (security audits, but more like pretend hacker) so I am pretty sure I am the only one with admin on my own network.

Now those little data packets are all encrypted when they hit my ISP and are told to go to a Tor node (lets say the node is in Sweden), that node then passes the encrypted network packets to another node (lets say that one is in Russia), and then another (Germany), and lastly it pops out the exit node (lets say it's in France). The exit node's ISP can see where the request was made because the data is unencrypted at this point, the response is received and sent back to me much in the same way it was sent but keep in mind my ISP never sees the response because the exit encryptes the data passes it back to germany, then russia, then sweden, then finally back to me, but I receive the encrypted packets and my machine decrypts the response ONLY once those packets are safe from the eyes of a prying ISP.

So dear sir, trace me - First call up Sweden and convince them you need to seize that first Tor node I hit, and you better hope that was a business and not just some random person running that node otherwise the chances of a log are LONG LONG gone.

Ok, we will assume Sweden gave you the logs you asked for (of course their Citizens heard about this and are outraged) And lets say that this node just happen to keep great logs, and you can see that the encrypted packets that where sent from my network to my ISP, then to Sweden (that, remember, you [as the tracer] still don't know what is in said packets) and now to Russia from this Sweden node. Now, you must repeat that with Russia.

You see where this is goin? Unless the gov is sniffing EVERY exit node (trust me it won't take long before the tech savvy people using Tor find a node that is sniffing and then it gets blacklisted) and working with multiple nations (some who aren't really friendly) you will never track me if I am using Tor properly.

As for DNS there are many ways to avoid this issue, the reason it has so much attention is because BY default Tor does a bad job at this, so for someone that just thinks they can download BitCoin fire up Tor and and be done they are putting themselves at risk for POSSIBLE DNS leakage.

I know this is old....but Alexander you are off here.

"reports that Bitcoin can be used to anonymously make purchases online are just flat-out untrue."

Let's talk hypothetical...

Let's say I've spoofed my MAC and have either logged on to a wireless network the is open, or cracked, or public (like a coffee shop)

I can do this from the privacy of my on home, or a parking lot to avoid cameras.

Using Tor I can obfuscate my IP and encrypt traffic that bounces around from Tor node to Tor node, and the only way to trace a Tor connection is...

1.) Improperly configured Tor
2.) DNS leakage (can be fixed easily)
3.) Someone is sniffing the exit node and reporting it to a governmental agency

...You see the great thing here is that in the EXTREMELY unlikely case they actually find out where the original traffic came from - they have no way to trace it back to me, because I am long gone from the network I made the purchase from.

Of course a hacker that does this for a living will just use an already compromised network to make a purchase from with BitCoin.

If I where using any other method like a bank transfer, money order, PayPal, etc. all these methods are very easy to trace and unless you are using a compromised account - you generally have to provide proof of identity with these methods, whereas BitCoin treats you like a number and has know knowledge of what number you are...only you do.

I feel I am rambling now...

Short story is: You can use the interwebs anonymously if you know how. And if you insist that BigGov is indeed monitoring EVERYTHING all the time and that there is no escape from them...well then - here's your Tin Foil hat.
