Did BP know that its well had a massive leak down below since March?

The MMS has a searchable database of well activity reports (WAR) that oil companies file during the drilling of a well.

I went through those reports to match the timeline of the 5 well blowouts that occurred during the drilling of the well to the depths of those blowouts.

After putting the WAR documents into a single page I notice two abnormalities in the documents.

Both of the abnormalities were reported right after well collapsed on the drill string in March which may indicate that BP did in fact know since March that there was huge leak in the well down hole.

The documents show that right after the well collapsed on the drill string during the drilling of the well the BOP pressure tests dropped from 10,000 PSI to 6,500 PSI.

The documents also show that at the same time an odd drop in the pressure in the 18 casing followed by a sharp increase in pressure in the 16 inch section of the well was created.

Summary of the BP Gulf Oil Spill Well Activity Reports

Between 10/18/2009 And 3/15/2010 all BOP pressure tests showed a low reading of 250 PSI and a high reading of 10000 PSI.

Two Well Activity Reports (WAR) were submitted for the week of 3/14/2010 to 3/20/2010.

Both showed a BOP pressure test on 3/15/2010. The first WAR report showed a high BOP pressure test reading of 10,000 PSI.

The second WAR showed that the BYPASS number changed from 00 to 01, the Wellbore number changed from 00 to 01 and the high BOP Pressure was only 6500 PSI as opposed to the previous 10,000 PSI.

http://www.gomr.mms.gov/homepg/fastfacts/war/war.asp?-150694

The first report showed a Casing/liner/tubing record at 18 inch section had a pressure of 3050 PSI.

But in the second report BP showed Casing/liner/tubing record at the 16 inch section further down hole had a pressure of 3600 which is much higher than the 3050 PSI which is up hole.

Questions about the abnormalities in the reports

1) Is it normal for the the BOP Pressure test to drop 3500 PSI? Does that indicate a hole in the well or just BP started to pressure test with lower pressure? If they were just using lower pressure why did they decide to lower the test pressure from 10,000 psi to 6,500 psi? I understand during this week the well collapsed on the drill pipe and they needed to cut the drill pipe. They originally told the MMS they would be shutting the well down but instead ended up bypassing.

2) Why is the the a drop in pressure at the 18 inch tubing followed by an increase in the 16 inch section followed by a sharp drop off?

Here is a table of the BOP pressure tests as well as the pressure tests in each section of the well.

Size PSI   BOP Pressure
28 ? <– Why no pressures tests here?
22 3400   10,000 PSI
22 3400   10,000 PSI
18 3050 <– Why the Drop off here? 10,000 PSI
Well Collapses on drill string.
BP cuts drill string and bypasses to new well bore.
BOP Pressure tests drop from 10,000 psi to 6,500 psi
16 3600 <– Why the increase here? 6500 PSI
13.625 2400 <– Then a 1200 PSI Decrease here here? 6,500 PSI
11.875 1800 <– Then increased drop offs after the spike? 6,500 PSI
9.875 914 <– Then increased drop offs after the spike? 6,500 PSI
