BP measures gas leak near Gulf Oil Spill well

Florida Oil Spill Law earlier captured video of a BP Gulf Oil Spill ROV watching methane gas leaking from the sea floor at the base of the blowout preventer just inches from the well head.

ROV Skandi Neptune, Captured July 30, 2010 at 6:10 p.m.:

Bubbles seep from the sea floor just inches from wellhead.

It may not look like much, but the bubbles indicate seepage from the well. Possibly the upper part of casing, as the bubbles are so close to the wellhead. The seafloor in this area may become unstable, leading to an increase tilt of the BOP and containment system and then the collapse of the entire structure. The end result? A situation that is almost impossible to contain, let alone stop. Said Newsweek, “If such leaks aren’t sealed off in time, the entire structure could topple over.”

See:

The ROV appears rather interested in these bubbles coming up from the exact same spot every few seconds.

Bubbles had been emanating from the valves on the BOP, though bubbles seeping from the sea bed near the BOP have NOT been publicly admitted.

As I previously noted Thad Allen has reported that the 40 feet of relief well has caved in.

Thad Allen makes it sound like it is not that big of a deal but one can only speculate about what it means for the relief well integrity and whether or not it will affect the cementing of the relief well.

We also can not forget that experts have warned that if the relief well blows it could risk leaking up to 240,00 barrels per day.

It has been confirmed that there are several cracks in the rocks around BP’s leaking well as well as an open hole in the well casing near the area that the relief well is being drilled.

Experts have also warned that such sea floor collapses could prevent BP from permanently capping the leaky well using relief wells.

Another thing to keep in mind is that before the Deepwater Horizon well blowout in April the walls of that well also collapsed while BP was drilling the well so lets keep our fingers crossed that history does not repeat itself.

I also pointed out some weird sonar readings in the area over the last few days.

This video shows the sonar watching a “blob” and toward the end of the video the entire edge turns a bright pink.

I will add updates here.

Update: BP now measuring the amount of gas leaking.

It appears the BP may be worried about the leak on the sea floor as well as it is now holding a device over the leak apparently to either measure the amount of gas leaking from the sea floor or to measure how fast the gas leak is increasing.

Notice the ROV is labeled Gas Monitoring.

Of course the video doesn’t record correctly… but there are areas in the video where you can see fresh oil floating up through the mess.

See 0:15 and 00:40 – 1:00 in the video for example.
