The Amount Of Neurotoxin Pesticide Corexit Sprayed By BP Tops 1 Million Gallons
Posted by Alexander Higgins - June 5, 2010 at 6:56 am - Permalink - Source via Alexander Higgins Blog
BP’s latest oil spill response update for June 4th says the total amount of the dispersant used in the Gulf of Mexico more than 1,021,000 gallons.
But what most people don’t know is that the active ingredient of the toxic chemical dispersant, which is up to 60% by volume, being sprayed by BP to fight the Gulf oil spill is a neurotoxin pesticide that is acutely toxic to both human and aquatic life, causes cancer, causes damage to internal organs such as the liver and kidneys simply by absorbing it through the skin and may cause reproductive side effects.
In fact the neurotoxin pesticide that is lethal to 50% of life in concentrations as little as 2.6 parts per million has been banned for use in the UK since 1998 because it failed the UK “Rocky shore test” which assures that the dispersant does not cause a “significant deleterious ecological change” – or to put that in layman’s terms it can kill off the entire food chain.
Corexit has also earned the highest EPA warning label for toxicity which means the effects of the toxic chemicals to the eye are corrosive resulting in irreversible destruction of ocular tissue and other tissue with corneal involvement along with an burning that can persist for more than 21 days and effects to human skin are corrosive resulting in tissue destruction into the dermis and/or scarring.
Corexit was widely used after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill and according to a literature review performed by the group the Alaska Community Action on Toxics was later linked with widespread long lasting health impacts in people including respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders.
The “Human Health Hazards” are said to be “Chronic” for Corexit EC9527A according to the EPA.
So What Are These Dispersants Made Of That Makes Them Such a Powerful Neurotoxin Pesticide?
The main ingredients of Corexit is 2-Butoxyethanol which can make up to 60% of the dispersant and is known to be toxic to blood, kidneys, liver, and the central nervous system (CNS).
2-Butoxyethanol is also known to cause cancer, birth defects and has been found to cause genetic mutations and is a delayed chronic health hazard as well as an environmental hazardous material
Corexit also contains Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Mercury, and Cyanide.
How effective is Corexit in dispersing Gulf crude?
Corexit 9500 is only 54.7% effective and Corexit 9527A is 63.4% effective in dispersing the crude oil found off the shores of South Louisiana.
BP has sprayed both Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527 into the Gulf of Mexico to disperse the oil both of which have been banned in the UK since 1998 for failure to pass the Rocky Shores Test.
By BP’s own admission Corexit has the potential for bioaccumulation meaning it has the potential to accumulate in the tissues of organism beginning with the first organism in a food chain.
Why allow the use of these toxic dispersants?
Well the EPA has ordered BP to stop using the dispersants but BP has refused
Instead BP replied with its justification for using Corexit which the EPA responded to saying BP’s response “lacked sufficient analysis and focused more defending your initial decision” .
In general, the EPA justifies the use of dispersants because they are less toxic than oil and the cause less of an environment impact that oil along the coastline calling dispersants an environmental trade off which is the lesser of two evils.
However the choice of using Corexit contradicts both of those justifications.
Corexit is lethal in as little as 2.6 parts per million where oil is lethal in 11 parts per million meaning that Corexit is over 4 times more toxic than oil.
Furthermore scientific studies show that oil dispersed with Corexit is 11 times more lethal than oil alone.
In fact the study referenced showed that crude oil was lethal at 4250 parts per million to killifish but combination of oil mixed with Corexit was lethal in as little as 317.7 ppm.
“Dispersed oils were more toxic than crude oils,” noted the report.
The other justification of lessening the environmental impact along the shoreline doesn’t hold up either as the reason Corexit was banned in the UK is because it was in fact shown to have a “significant deleterious ecological change” on the shoreline.
The fact Corexit is 4 times as toxic as oil and up to 11 times as toxic when combined with oil it literally makes no sense to allow the use of such a toxic chemical that can “delete” the ecological systems along the Gulf coast.
A report in the journal Environmental Toxicology a decade ago concluded that lethality levels in “dispersed oil combinations were significantly more toxic to these organisms than .. crude oil.” Another study, this time of snails and amphipods reached exactly the same conclusion.
What are the long term effects of Corexit?
The EPA has stated over and over that the long term effects of the use of Corexit are unknown yet there is plenty of data documenting the long term effects on humans (see below).
Further making the EPA claims questionable is EPA’s Deepwater horizon response sites site clearly states that between 1 million and 2.5 million gallons of the neurotoxin pesticide Corexit was used in the 1979 ixtoc oil spill which makes it unfathomable that the EPA doesn’t know what the long term effects are of a chemical that has been widely used, and eventually banned in certain countries, over a period of 30 years.
To the contrary of the EPA’s statement scientific studies widely state Corexit 9527 has been tested extensively in the laboratory and used on oil spills since 1978 and a considerable number of toxicity reports exist concerning a wide variety of species.
So why does the Federal Government continue to tell us the the long term effects of the dispersant usage are unknown?
Why does the Federal Government continue to pretend like they know so little about the dispersant BP is being used?
What are the chemical components of the dispersants COREXIT 9500 and COREXIT 9527?
While the main ingredient which makes up to 60% of Corexit is reason enough to cause concern.
If you dig any more dirt on these let me know.

What does the EPA say about the human health effects expected as a result of using the dispersants?
The EPA warning about human health affects says
People working with dispersants are strongly advised to use a half face filter mask or an air-supplied breathing apparatus to protect their noses, throats, and lungs, and they should wear nitrile or PVC gloves, coveralls, boots, and chemical splash goggles to keep dispersants off skin and out of their eyes. CDC provides more information on reducing occupational exposures while working with dispersants during the Gulf Oil Spill Response.

Hasn’t BP switched over to a new less toxic version of Corexit
BP does claim that since it now using the more environmentally friendly version of Corexit it can not be verified whether or not the newer version contains 2-butoxyethanol or not.
BP and the manufacturer to date have refused to release a list of all of the chemicals contained in Corexit 9500 claiming that the ingredients are proprietary.
It is quite possible that 2-butoxyethanol or an even more hazardous substance is contained in Corexit 9500.
Corexit 9500, like Corexit 9527, also contains Propylene Glycol a substance generally recognized as safe for human consumption.
However, Propylene Glycol depletes oxygen from water 5 times greater than raw sewage and the massive amounts used in the BP Gulf oil spill could help contribute to dead zones in the Gulf where aquatic life can not survive.
What about the effects of Corexit on the oil spill clean up workers
During the Exxon Valdez another version of Corexit was used to clean up the oil.
CNN reports that the average life expectancy of workers who cleaned up the Exxon Valdez is 51 years old and most of those workers are now dead.
Watch this CNN video on how the dispersants are affecting the cleanup workers which claims that BP is putting its public image over the safety of those cleaning up the oil spill.

Note To Readers:
Despite the comment in this opinion 2-Butoxyethanol – The main ingredient in Corexit – is listed as both a neurotoxin and a pesticide Missmoa should do some research on sources beside Wikipedia, like the dozens listed in the post.
——–
The active ingredient in the Corexit used, 2-Butoxyethanol, is NOT a “neurotoxin pesticide”. It is a solvent agent, used in household products. Check Wikipedia for a start. You somehow managed to confuse it with a completely different product, the bactericid Corexit 7670, which has completely different ingredients, and does not contain 2-Butoxyethanol at all. It is just plain wrong.
Do some fact checking before posting.
Wikipedia is not necessarily a credible source of information.
2-Butoxyethanol is listed as a neurotoxin on the NeuroResearch page at http://www.neuroassist.com/Neurotoxins.htm. It is listed as a chemical in the PAN Pesticides Database found at http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051 .
The EPA doesn’t list 2-Butoxyethanol as an ingredient of Corexit-9500 – the dispersant being used in the Gulf. The solvent category is empty, labeled as “Confidential”. Just because 2-Butoxyethanol is listed as an ingredient in Corexit 7670 doesn’t mean that it can’t be hidden under the Confidential “Solvent” section.
http://www.epa.gov/emergencies/content/ncp/products/corex950.htm
It’s actually the US government that is spraying it – the EPA both permits and arranges sales for these dispersant’s.
And I would not rely on NPR or the Sierra Club as sources. Both are funded by the General Electric Foundation. General Electric received 138 Billion bucks from the FDIC to support the Obama Administration position. GE receives taxpayer grants to still corn fuel. It takes 1.6 gallons of diesel fuel to make 1 Gal of corn fuel (IOW US taxpayers are paying GE to manufacture fewer BTU’s than the BTU’s consumed by the manufacturing process. GE want taxpayer to pay for low efficiency wind turbines. GE competes with big oil and is shamelessly using this opportunity to make the pitch. GE’s stock is falling through the floor. GE is a standing member in the War Industrial Complex. GE will scream to high heaven about a 100 birds while failing to mention the GE Gatling guns that have helped murder millions of Iraqi (no WMD folks) and has peppered Iraq and Afghanistan with so much Depleted Uranium they glow from space in the X-Ray spectrum.
Outraged by a few tar balls and oily birds – such patriots – but nothing about millions murdered innocents and birth defects due to the toxic affects of GU dispensed DU – shameless!
Everyone except BP and Obama knows corexit is going to permanantly destroy the food chain and life cycles of all creatures great and small in and around the gulf.Ive said it a hundred times.Bioremediation.Have Obama google it and check the scientific results of when these microbes were used on oil spills in the past.Im sure he will be astonished at the positive results (OR WILL HE???).

This is a small passage from a 2008 report.
Dead zones can be found worldwide(link to NASA dead zone page). The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is one of the largest in the world. Marine dead zones can be found in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, off the coast of Oregon, and in the Chesapeake Bay. Dead zones may also be found in lakes, such as Lake Erie.

Innuendo and factual glitches are the bread and butter of the corrupt mafia style pretense of US government being ran on us out of DC and K-Street Kiddie Porn Parlors.
As stakeholders and owners of the US we should avoid engaging in what they engage in. They’re drunk with vanity – truth and our sheer numbers are the cure.
Cheers!
Thanks for editing my comment instead of answering me, Alex Higgens.
Kelly, Corexit 7670 is a bactericide that has nothing to do with the current dispersant operation, but is nevertheless the only source in the blog post for the “neurotoxic pesticide” claim. While pesticides may contain 2-Butoxyethanol, its main use is as solvent.
BTW, I suggested Wikipedia as a start, not as source. That it is listed on some web page as neurotoxin is not a good source either; all scientific/official sheets I have seen did not label it as neurotoxic and concluded a very modest toxicity overall. Or read http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051
In general, I urge people to read the scientific papers before believing what is floating in the blogosphere. For example. as source for the “it is 4 times more toxic then oil” often this very comprehensive study is linked – here is a one page abstract, please read it and decide for yourself what it says.
http://www.iosc.org/papers/00020.pdf
I did not reply because Kelly already replied … no point in replying with the same comment.
Again your claim that Corexit is not a pesticide or a neurotoxin is refuted by the many references linked to in the post
Instead continue to deny it is either a pesticide or a neurotoxin when many of the references listed clearly state that Corexit can be absorbed through the skin and cause damage to the central nervous system – hence clearly it is a neurotoxin.
Further to correct you statement “very modest toxicity overall” should read “very modest ACUTE toxicity overall” with ACUTE = LETHAL
For starters look at the links on the pesticide resource page http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051 which has links to even further resources to prove your claim as incorrect.
For example: http://www.pesticideinfo.org/List_NTPStudies.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051 clearly shows that the uses for 2-Butoxyethanol are “Fungicide, Microbiocide, Solvent, Adjuvant “
Further your claim “That it is listed on some web page as neurotoxin is not a good source either” is frivolous well
The fact is that the reference is not just some web page – the resource referenced that lists it as a neurotoxin is from is “NeuroResearch Clinics, Inc.” a PUBLISHED research project from the University School of Medicine and was written by Marty L. Hinz, MD the President Clinical Research of NeuroResearch Clinics, Inc.
Also the study you cite http://www.iosc.org/papers/00020.pdf is published by EXXON BIOMEDICAL SERVICES and argues that the lethality of Corexit should be based on whether it kills the life it comes in contact with over a 4 hour period instead of the SCIENTIFICALLY ESTABLISHED 96 hour standard used for toxicity testing.
The report that you reference PAID for BY EXXON in an attempt to reduce the liability of EXXON in lawsuits filed by all of the people who ended up with long term chronic health problems from the use of the dispersant during the Exxon Valdez oil spill

Reader comments there contain some relevent extra details, like reports of similar effects elsewhere, and one report of someone experiencing skin burning from exposure to light misty rain. Hmm… that was a listed effect of Corexit skin contact.
This one could fade away to nothing, or it could be the next stage of the massive unfolding BPocalypse. (That’s when the A-pocalypse (H1N1 flu shots) fails, and the Plan B-Pocalypse is tried. Via BP.)
I would be willing to bet that somehow this is all tied to genetically modified seedstock and the ability of modified crops to withstand chemical bombardment.
Let’s see how many reports we get of farmers using Monsanto/Dupont seeds that end up having these same problems…as opposed to organic farmers…
Aye. I see you chose to ignore me, and just switch out the link. You should consider changing the text as well, since there is no support for “neurotoxin pesticide” at this source either. See http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35051#Toxicity.

The biggest mistake you are making Alex is that the main Corexit product being used in the oil spill is Corexit 9500 which does NOT contain 2-butoxyethanol. As missmoa said, do some research.
Hi Bob,
If you read the post you will see that the dispersants used by BP include Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527 not just Corexit 9500.
Daily Herald Reports Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527 used for BP Gulf oil spill
It is well documented, the Daily Herald is just one of many reports http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=382521
It is also why the COREXIT 9527A Manufacturer MSDS is posted on the Deepwater Horizon website and clearly shows that 2-butoxyethanol is the main ingredient.
The “Corexit” used as “dispersant” is neither pesticide nor “bactericide”. It is a solvent that makes crude oil permeable to water so that naturally occurring microbes can get at the oi. The microbes eat the oil – make baby microbes to eat the oil and then poop the digestive waste back in the food chain to be eaten by other critters.
The innuendo game and lack of facts in many discussions across the web could easily lead one to believe there’s a long line at the General Electric Foundations bursar’s office.
Oil is part of earth’s nature.Remove all the water from the Gulf of Mexico, and there’d be a sea of oil. The water is the only thing holding the oil down. The 1979 Mexican Blowout was cleaned by “nature” in two years. Despite the fact dispersant was not used for Valdez, there are no visible or measurable signs that event ever occurred. Nature will take care of this.
Other than GE Foundation carney barkers we should ask Cui Bono (who benefits) from all the innuendo anger that’s being generated?
* Congress has not passed a budget.
* Obama’s administration is a failure. If they did not have the oil spill to take cover behind, what would the US gentry be looking at instead? Would they be looking at an approaching US sovereign debt crisis?
* Wall Street Banksters need an inflated dollar to pump up their market bubbles again – oil prices we’re dropping. THe higher the price for oil – the weaker (more inflated) the USD, thus the illusion of market growth and recovery.
2 Exxon Valdez events per year ooze up from the gulf floor every year.
Annually, 120 Million barrels of oil ooze into all the oceans of the world – hence the reason there exists in nature those little oil eating microbe critters.
Best advice is to treat any government rant, and the rants of their facilitators on mainstream boob tube as an intended distraction. It’s not what hey show or say. What is most important is what they don’t talk about and what they don’t show.
It’s okay to pretend a sheeple and run a con against the prom queens in the counting rooms. However, it is sad to willingly becaome a sheeple.
Oooo Baaaaa Ma
Oooo Baaaaa Ma
Get the picture?
The Mexican Blowout in 1979
The Mexican blow out in 1979
The evidence indicates that it is a pesticide as well as a bactericide.
It is nice that you point out that they idea behind using the dispersant is so microbes can eat the oil because 2-butoxyethanol is also a Microbiocide.
How are microbes supposed to eat the dispersed oil when Corexit will kill them before they get a chance to do so?
Since it is apparent that the references linked are not being checked let me make it easy….

“Especially for IGNORING The E.P.A. request, ‘NOT To Use Corexit’? I mean like,

My dear crlwllns, the EPA approved and requires the use of the dispersant BP is using. The EPA over seas the manufacture and stock piling of the dispersant the EPA is using.
Infact the dispersant being used is the only dispersant the EPA allows.
Every rig and floor riser design, every switch that is thrown, every pressure reading logged, every solvent used, every cement mixture and every piece of drill pipe used in the production of oil signed off on by both the EPA and MMS.
Oil production operates under strict government regulation. Government inspectors are on site at every oil operation under the jurisdiction of the US government.
It is not the only dispersant the EPA allows. It is also obvious that the EPA is not watching everything with the degree of oversight that you imply.
That is why after Congressman Merkey sent the EPA this letter questioning why BP was using Corexit the EPA ordered BP to stop using the dispersant within 24 hours.
More EPA approved dispersants can be found in this document http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/dispersants/5-21bp-response.pdf
Another thing BP doesn’t do is contribute to political campaigns or PACs.
The government is owned by the banks. The banks need a weak USD to inflate market bubbles. The most popular way to weaken the USD is raise the price of oil. Invading oil producing countries raises the price of oil. Drilling Moratoriums raise the price of oil. Calling every government of an oil producing country raises the price of oil. To inflate the USD all one has to do is create the circumstance that will raise the price of oil.
The bottom has been falling out of the oil market. Not because of the spill, but because of over supply. The hope for change drilling moratorium hopes to inflated the price of oil, which will weaken the USD resulting in the reflation of the financial markets bubble.
Your beef is with the EPA. Nothing is done on a rig without an EPA waiver or permit. BP certainly does not want to loose oil. BP certainly does not want to pay for a clean up. Cui Bono?
The Orlando seismic station has been going off the chart since March. So much so that the Orlando station released a PR indicating fissures have had formed along the gulf cost bend.
In the Yucatan the TIEG seismic station has also gone off the charts. The Gulf of Mexico without seismic tremors releases 2 Exxon Valdez spills a year naturally.
When all is said and done, we will probably learn that the volcano in Iceland that connects through the mid Atlantic ridge Haiti (earthquake) then doglegs west through the Central American isthmus where it splits north to the Baja Plate and south to Peru (recent quakes) and Chile (recent quakes).
Other oil platforms have been reporting seabed “ruptures”. Most recently Diamond. The source of the oil can be chemically traced. The Coast Gard has said that not all the oil is coming from Horizon.
Something is going on in the guld.
And lets not forget that the Gulf of Mexico is the biggest dead zone on the planet. That is due to the farm and industrial runoff that flows down the Mississippi. People don’t swim in, drink or eat from the waters of the Mississippi.
Something is going on. Stay objective. There were no WMD in Iraq and a million innocent Iraqis have been killed. Chest banging for war with Korea and Iran. Keep your mind open. We don’t know what happened or how it happened.
A couple of months back WRH was suggesting CIA earthquake machines were causing all the earthquakes and volcanoes. (i still giggle from that one)
We live in a world where misinformation and disinformation are the norm. Don’t believe anything you see on TV. They’re known liars and facilitators of mass murder. They don’t care about you. They don’t care about us. THey don’t care about the environment. They only care about covering up to protect or enhance their position.
You can only protect the environment by protecting yourself from the lies proffered by the government PR machine we know as the MSM.
The only fact we know for sure is: That if you’re wearing a deodorant, that deodorant is manufactured with the same Corexit they are using as the dispersant.
CONGRATULATIONS BP!!! YOU HAVE JUST COMMITTED MURDER!!! YOU HAVE COMMITTED BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WARFARE (ACCIDENTALLY OR NO!!! IT MATTERS NOT!!! WHAT DOES MATTER IS THAT MILLIONS OF LIVES ARE NOW AND WILL BE FOR MANY YEARS IN THE FUTURE AFFECTED BY WHAT YOU HAVE SENCELESSLY AND REDICULOUSLY DONE!!! YOU AND YOU ALONE, BP, HAVE COMMITTED THE GRAVEST OF CRIMES AGAINST MOTHER EARTH,AND TO THE AQUATIC LIFE AND LAND ANIMALS THAT ARE ASSOIATED! INFACT, AS A NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN, WE ”KNOW” THAT THE CIRCLE OF LIFE IS ALL INCLUSIVE!!!!!! AND ”YOU” BP HAVE JUST COMMITTED THE MOST HORRIFIC ATTROCITY AGAINST THE VERY CIRCLE OF LIFE I MYSELF HAVE EVER YET SEEN OR AM MOST LIKELY EVER YET ”TO” SEE! YOU HAVE CAST THE ”WORMWOOD” (THAT WHICH MAKETH BITTER). MAYBE I’M RIGHT, OR NO. BUT ONE THING’S FOR CERTAIN, YOU , BP, ARE WRONG. NOW HOW WILL YOU RECONCILE YOURSELVES?! HOW WILL YOU REPENT FOR THIS?! I SUGGEST YOU START NOW!!!!! JUDGEMENT IS COMING FROM UNELANAHI (GOD), FOR HIS SON COMETH WITH POWER TO JUDGE THIS WORLD WITH FIRE FROM THE SWORD THAT PROCEEDETH OUT OF HIS MOUTH! AHO!!!!!!!!!

I just watched a video on Youtube, about a movie called “Knowing”. It’s like Deja Vu
all over again! Here’s the link;

Most Incredible Piece of Evidence to Date!
(The youtube title is, “‘Knowing’ movie knew
about oil rig explosion.”) This movie, was made
back in 2009. To be ‘played out’, a year later,
in ‘REAL LIFE’! Stars Nicholas Cage.
Hi all sign this petition to tell congress that they need to stop BP from using dispersants in the Gulf. Spread the word about this petition.
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/25/stop-the-use-of-dispersants-in-the-gulf
Hey, thanks for covering this, great work.
The link you provided discussion on The Oil Drum was especially informative. We are in deep deep trouble here. I really wonder about the motivations of the people involved (BP / Monsanto with the 2-B in Corexit being the same stuff in Roundup)
Anyway, three things I want to mention in return.
1) There are reports of 3.4ppm benzene and and 1.2ppm H2S onshore. These are potentially dangerous levels, especially for benzene.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGxGVGiD3yk
2) Dr. Riki Ott has said BP is engaging in a systematic cover-up of dead carcassas washing ashore, with BP contracted individuals sweeping beaches at night, with flashlights. She also says health effects from the air are effecting many individuals involved in the response. She says they must wear respirators because of the danger. This information confirms the measurements in #1 of 3.4ppm benzene and 1.2ppm H2S.

3) There is now crop blight in coastal areas of Alabama and Louisiana. Farmers are convinced this is “something in the air.” I see two likely possibilities, both related to the BP spill. The first is that we have chemically contaminated precipitation. The second is that we have chemically contaminated air. Either way, this is really serious.
Video to the coastal crop blight which appeared over the weekend.

As a bio tech retired from the military, I too believe that the dispersants are going to be a hazard for years to come. As you mentioned it sinks the oil and contaminants, burying them in the sediment and extends hazard time.
Fish & shell fish will be contaminated for years to come. I would surmise that many of the health hazards will not show up in humans for years. The neurological damage will be attributed to aging.
I would like to see more books published like the Valdez spill, letting the readers know the truth about the BP spill in the Gulf, and its effects on seafood & people.
I foresee the same warning in the future as with mercury in fish. Only eat seafood once a week to be safe….thanks BP for contaminating our food-chain for year to come….you have solved the aging problem! We simply die early, rather living past 60.

BP’s New Cap. A Ruse?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zSf6dNe4MY
What better way to create calm and hope than to announce that next week there is going be a new cap put on the well, and maybe the leak will be stopped. I fear the worst, that it is a ruse, to buy time. What for? Martial law is all I can think of. With the restrictions on journalists, and the use of Corexit, it seems that suspicion is begged for.
BP = BIG PARASITES!! Killing the rest of us for their stupid profits??? This company might as well be the god-damned antichrist – every one of their CEOS, half of MMS and some in the EPA should be round up and SHOT – this is an environmental crime of UNBELIEVABLE proportions and is not only killing endangered and other soon to be endangered marine life – but apparently is killing humans and crops and, given the ocean’s currents, god knows how much it will disperse to kill the rest of us. This product is banned in Britain b/c it can wipe out whole ecosystems yet they BRITISH Petroleum are using it here??? THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! Where are our troops when we need them?? Off fighting some stupid war in some sh-hole third world country??? FOR OIL??? The use of Corexit is a war against America FAR FAR worse than 9/11 – I’m sorry to raise that spectre, but this IS terrorism at its absolute worst and apparently with the aide and indifference of some in our own corporate infested government!!!

This is bogus. Anyone who believes any of this pseudo-science should really read up on basic biochemistry. Corexit is largely composed of propylene glycol and 2-Butoxyethanol, which does not bio-accumulate. 2-Butoxyethanol is soap, people. It’s the main ingredient in most home cleaning solutions – you know, the kind that Americans use everyday and wash down their drains with their waste-water. Don’t believe me? Read this: http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts118.html
Yes, its a chemical that can cause harm. But you know what else causes harm? Oil on the surface of the water! Its a lose/lose situation. In this case, people who are actually educated about chemicals made a call to use dispersant to reduce the risk to shorelines and wetlands. The tradeoff is that dispersant traps oil under water until it is naturally broken up by the ocean. There’s no perfect solution – using dispersant or not using it – either way wildlife dies. You can read more about the pros and cons and the decision to use one method vs. another in this report from the National Academy of Sciences: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=11283
In any case, why is everyone filled with so much righteous indignation about the supposed evils of corexit instead of looking at their own personal behaviors and connection to the larger picture? Sure, Corexit is bad. So is OIL saturating a wetland. You know what else is bad? Burning oil! And throwing plastic away where it sits for hundreds of years leaching junk into the ecosystem or making its way into the food chain. Of course it’s harder to get all irate when we are to blame. It’s much easier to get upset in a situation like this when it’s more clear who the bad guys are (oil company, etc.) But the truth is that everyone drives cars! Everyone travels on vacation, heats their homes, cooks food, and buys cheap plastic stuff made on the other side of the world. Even if you don’t drive, do you have any idea how much stuff is made with petrochemicals? Chap stick. Bike helmets. Hospital equipment. Seat belts. Tennis shoes. You name it. Even the tree huggers who only eat organic food use untold amounts of oil when they buy organic blueberries from Chile in December.
So if everyone wants to be angry upset, lets all get angry and upset in a productive way. Instead of being lazy and finger pointing and fear mongering about dispersant, why don’t we take a look at our own consumption? Demand influences supply. If we reduce demand for oil and things made or transported by oil, guess what will happen?
Instead of worrying about the insignificant difference between damage caused by oil on top of the water or oil and some soap in the water, why not direct our focus on the question of why the demand for oil is so great that we are collectively willing to risk damaging all different ecosystems to fulfill our insatiable need to consume so much and throw so much away. Choose not to drive or fly anywhere on your next vacation. If you care about animals, don’t eat them. Grow your own vegetables. Don’t buy plastic. Make your own food and your own home-cleaning solutions. And learn as much as you can about science and industry so that you can separate real risk and real harm from bogus pseudo-science (like the info on this site).
Midge there are plenty of what would be good points. and there are some good suggestions that can be extracted from your post, but you fail to see, or at least to acknowledge the context of the society you’re addressing, and therefore, you’re blaming victims of ignorance and inability to think which has been largely INTENTIONALLY inflicted upon them by the very corporate powers and selfish, malicious, wealthy individuals who have conspired in myriad ways to keep people misinformed, uninformed, distracted, disinterested, duped and brainwashed in so many ways.
Furthermore, you yourself are either completely ignorant of the facts of these dispersants or are lying. If you’re lying it’s most likely because you have one form of self interest or another which you value over the health and safety of millions of people.
Can you please, please, please let us know why plain ol’ harmless “soap” in the form of Corexit has been banned in England and has such strong warnings in other countries including here in the US? Why is “soap” causing such strong and immediate reactions and results such as burning eyes and lungs, nausea and headaches when people are breathing near it or being near it? Also very nice of you to ignore all the other ingredients such as Cadmium and so forth aside from what you describe as soap.
I guess we should just ignore Riki Ott, this Kaufman dude from EPA and the numerous other scientists that have studied it in the past and warned against it the minute BP started to use it, as well as the very warnings and findings from it’s manufacturers and users? Yeah, it’s just fucking soap! We should just listen to “midge” whoever the fuck that is!
In a perfect world some computer detecting would identify your real name and have some way of tracking whether or not your lies or bullshit actually led anyone dismiss the danger and breathe or touch or ingest contaminated food or water whom otherwise would not have and if they had and it caused them damage you’d be held accountable. If it were found you knowingly lied and caused death or major harm to anyone and I were the judge and jury you’d be joining illustrious fellow prisoners on death row such as most of the Bush admin, much of the current one and most of the worlds corporate leaders and most involved in corporate media!
I don’t believe in the death penalty generally, especially in our current system with who ends up as the targets and why, but I DEFINITELY believe in it for people in great power that knowingly use power and, or, influence to cause or allow harm to masses of people!
