If you haven’t been following the news, North Korea is on the breaking point of an all out Nuclear War with South Korea and the US.
The US has so far garnered the support of Britain, Australia and Canada to take action against North Korea who has threatened an “all out nuclear war” if provoked.
However the efforts of the US to woo to join an a unified multi-national response to the crisis have so far fallen short.
In short North Korea is claiming the the international investigation that has fingered them in the sinking of the South Korean Warship the Chonan [navy corvette] has been fabricated by South Korea with the backing of the US.
The official news coming out of the North Korean press reads like a post off of a conspiracy theory forum instead of professional journalism but does seem to make some valid points such as North Korea has not been allowed to review the evidence against it.
North Korea also claims that findings of the investigation are absurd making claims such as the materials found in the sunken Chonan match the alloys that are used to make North Korean torpedoes.
However, North Korea counters the claim saying that the ship itself was manufactured out of the same alloy and that their is no possible way for South Korea or any other nation for that matter to know the materials that North Korea used to make it’s torpedoes.
That makes sense knowing that North Korea is one of the most secretive nations on earth and the news reports claim that the materials used to make its torpedoes are top secret classified information.
North Korea is claiming that the US has fabricated the event because a treaty between the US and South Korea will expire in 2012 and could potentially lead the need for the US to withdrawal its military from South Korea after the treaty expires.
Normally one would dismiss the news coming out of North Korea’s state run media as merely propaganda but the fact the both China and Russia seem to have some reason to believe North Korea’s claims gives the appearance that North Korea’s claims may some validity.
Both China and Russia have expressed condolences for to South Korea but refuse to accept the findings of the the international investigation either.
Both China and Russia have fallen short on outright condemnation of North Korea with China going on to say the international investigation has hints of a “false flag”.
Both nations have said that they will conduct their own investigation to see if North Korea’s claims are true.
The situation on the Korean peninsula could rapidly spin out of control if the US finds China and Russia pointing fingers at it for fabricating evidence to provoke a war.
While that situation unfolds, Israel has sent 4 nuclear subs to sit off the coast of Iran reports the UK times.
Three German-built Israeli submarines equipped with nuclear cruise missiles are to be deployed in the Gulf near the Iranian coastline.
The first has been sent in response to Israeli fears that ballistic missiles developed by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah, a political and military organisation in Lebanon, could hit sites in Israel, including air bases and missile launchers.
The submarines of Flotilla 7 — Dolphin, Tekuma and Leviathan — have visited the Gulf before. But the decision has now been taken to ensure a permanent presence of at least one of the vessels.
The submarines could be used if Iran continues its program to produce a nuclear bomb. “The 1,500km range of the submarines’ cruise missiles can reach any target in Iran,” said a navy officer.
Apparently responding to the Israeli activity, an Iranian admiral said: “Anyone who wishes to do an evil act in the Persian Gulf will receive a forceful response from us.”
Israel’s urgent need to deter the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah alliance was demonstrated last month. Ehud Barak, the defence minister, was said to have shown President Barack Obama classified satellite images of a convoy of ballistic missiles leaving Syria on the way to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
However, what the main stream media is reporting may not be accurate.
News out of the Arab world seems to indicate that Israel may be hedging its plan to blockade a humanitarian relief shipment to Gaza strip.
On Thursday, the Freedom Flotilla was waiting for the last group of campaigners to get onboard. A group of European parliamentarians was to set out from Cyprus to join the fleet, but Cyprus authorities would not let them.
The flotilla, made up of nine ships, is to bring 10,000 tons of humanitarian cargo into Gaza, including medicines and notebooks, along with about 700 people: MPs from Israel and Germany, writers, scientists, two Al-Jazeera camera crews, newswire writers and TV journalists from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria and France.
While the flotilla was preparing for sail, an international military exercise kicked off at Cyprus. Larnaca was flooded with military officials, there were helicopters flying over the haven, and ships from different countries were moving in the sea. According to one of the Russian officers, this is a regular exercise; it’s not a NATO exercise, as Cyprus is not part of the alliance.
Isreal has vowed to stop the humanitarian aid from reaching the Gaza strip while the the humanitarian aid mission is vowing to break the Israel blockade.
It is quite possible that the ship has something on it that Israel does not want to reach the Gaza strip, but according to Arab news sources this is an EU supplied ship and EU supplied humanitarian aid mission sponsored by EU parliament members.
It seems that Iran and Turkey have warned against Israel’s blocking of the ships as Israel has called for the US to perform an all out blockade of Iran
Connected to this, the UK times reports that General Petraeus has ordered US spies to prepare for anti-nuclear strike on Iran.
There are also reports that Turkey has deployed an Air Defense System to ‘defend’ Syria, Iran Against Israel Raids
If Turkey sides with the Iranian alliance it would be breaking its NATO alliance and it is speculated that it would force Israel to use nuclear arsenal.
Egypt, which has NATO equipment as well, could come into play here as well as according to non-confirmed reports from the Examiner says the latest round of Egyptian war games in Sinai targeted Israel.
UPDATE 11:27 AM Well this turned out to be a mess. Israel Stormed the humanitarian aid ships and killed off some of the Pro-Palestinian activists. PBS has the story here
At least 10 pro-Palestinian activists carrying aid supplies bound for the Gaza Strip were killed Monday when an Israeli naval ship intercepted their flotilla bound for the blockaded region, according to the Israeli army. Dozens of activists were wounded.
The Israeli Defense Forces said in a statement the activists were killed when Israeli naval personnel boarded the six ships after the ships refused to dock in Israel. The military said the naval personnel were attacked with “live fire and light weaponry including knives and clubs.” The military then “employed riot dispersal means, including live fire.”
The ships, sponsored by the Free Gaza Movement and a Turkish group called Insani Yardim Vakfi, carried more then 600 activists, including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan-Maguire of Northern Ireland and Holocaust survivor, Hedy Epstein, 85.
International condemnation was swift. Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel and canceled three joint military exercises Monday. Protesters in Turkey tried to storm the Israeli consulate there and then marched to Istanbul’s main square.
“Regardless of any reasoning, such actions against civilians engaged in only peaceful activities are unacceptable,” a statement on the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s Web site said Monday. “Israel will be required to face the consequences of this act that involves violation of the international law.”
Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said that approximately 400 of the 581 passengers on the main ship in the flotilla were Turks.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded an investigation. “I am shocked by reports of killings and injuries of people on boats carrying supplies for Gaza,” he said.
And the Obama administration expressed concern about the attack. White House spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement that the United States “deeply regrets the loss of life and injuries sustained” in the incident. It comes a day before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned visit to Washington.
