Fact Check: Obama’s claim that the Oil spill has affected 3 only beaches.
The Claim: In his May 27 press conference on the Gulf oil spill, President Barack Obama declared Gulf Coast beaches safe and encouraged Americans to visit them. “Except for three beaches in Louisiana, all of the Gulf’s beaches are open, they are safe and they are clean,” he said.
Obama also claimed that he is fully in charge, that the Federal response is in full gear and that he is being briefed on everything that is happening.
Oh Really?
The Verdict: This NASA high resolution ASTER satellite image of the Mississippi River Delta shows Obama’s claim is dead wrong.
It provides very accurate accurate depiction of what’s really going on down on the ground.
All of the very bright white areas are actual oil slicks of the Gulf oil spill on the surface of the Mississippi river delta that can be seen from space.
Imagine what you can’t see. There are clearly more than 3 beaches affected, in fact there are over 150 miles of shoreline that have been slammed by the Gulf oil spill.

This NASA Earth Observatory image taken by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite shows a false-colour, high-resolution view of the very tip of the Mississippi River Delta. Ribbons and patches of oil that have leaked from the Deepwater Horizon well offshore are silver against the light blue colour of the adjacent water. Vegetation is red. Oil smoothes the water, making it a better mirror, so the oil-covered waters are very bright in this image.
