NASA Satellite Images Show Gulf Oil Spill Size Larger Than Florida

UPDATE: View new Satellite photos that now show this clearly without the need for highlighting
NASA satellite photos taken on March 1st, 2010 reveal that the oil slick from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill show that the Gulf oil spill size has now grown to be larger than Florida.
Original NASA Satellite Photo of Gulf oil slick taken May 1st, 2010.
Credit http://NASA.GOV Download the original satellite image and Google Earth KML file used to create the overlay at http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/subsets/?subset=AERONET_WaveCIS_Site_CSI_6.2010121.terra.1km.
Clicking on the KML file from the NASA site launches Google Earth and overlays the photos from the NASA satellite as shown below. It is immediately apparent that the Gulf oil spill size is much larger than projected and way beyond that of official government reports or any news that the main stream media is reporting.

After taking a screen shoot of the Google Earth screen I outlined the area of the Gulf oil spill size and then filled the outlined area using Paint.Net.

UPDATE: MUST SEE NEW SATELLITE PHOTOS – SPILL 2X SIZE OF FLORIDA
View the Satellite Images here showing oil spill 2 times the size of Florida
Update: The Government is definitely holding out.
The Huffington Post took these nice screen shots for us from ABC news.
ABC News is the first main stream news organization showing a more accurate display of the true size of the oil spill matching the overlay above. Notice that bottom half of the spill. which is clearly in the NASA satellite photos is not in the ABC simulation.
Within hours of this post several oceanographer’s have stepped forward and admit that as the satellite images show, the Gulf Oil Spill is now in the Gulf Loop current, which has prompted the HUGE warning on the Huffington Post that the Gulf oil spill will hit Gulf Loop Current and then Florida Keys in 24 hours and hence the Gulf Stream.
Why are they hiding the truth?
This is the information age the entire world has access to satellite images. For example, from yahoo news:
Mississippi state officials said Monday that the oil had advanced 20 miles closer to the coast since Sunday. However, they said Coast Guard officials assured them that they’d get at least 72 hours notice before the oil threatens the coastline.
And whatever happened to the lowball 1,000 barrel per day estimate? Luckily SkyTruth debunked that and the government quickly revised their numbers to 5,000 barrels per day and made several marine scientists come forward with estimates of 25,000 barrels plus per day.
University of Miami oceanographer Nick Shay tells us that the oil spill has already entered the Loop Current. The loop current pushes into the Gulf in a clockwise swirl, spilling into the Straits of Florida through the Keys and then back north in the Gulf Stream up the Atlantic coast.
Robert Weisberg , an oceanographer at the University of South Florida, says the bulk of the spill is now only 30 miles north of the Loop current and estimates that the oil spill will hit North Caroline in as little as two weeks.

This is truly a global catastrophe. Just consider the thermal image below of the Gulf Stream, whose path the Gulf Oil Spill will follow once hitting the Gulf Stream.
Now consider how these currents interact with other major North Atlantic Currents.
The Global model below shows the relationships between the major Atlantic Ocean currents and the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile the US Government refuses give forecast more than three days out and declines to speculate on the potential devastation of the Oil Spill if it makes it way up the US East Coast.

Global Map of Interaction Gulf Stream with Major North Atlantic Currents.
David Mosley, a spokesman from the U.S. Coast Guard at the spill’s command center in Robert, Louisiana told WYFF News 4’s Kim Quintero over the phone Friday afternoon that they can only forecast three days worth of data on wind speeds, direction and sea currents: the driving force of the oil. It would take longer than that for the oil to potentially reach Carolina shores.
This is frustrating – Leaking memo’s showing the government hiding actual data, refusing to inform the public on specifics, turning a blind eye while BP hires fisherman to help clean up the mess while forcing them to sign a waiver that limits them to only $5,000 in liabilities. What is going on here? Senators downplaying the spill as chocolate milk and saying we should not be concerned that this is not Armageddon. Politicians telling us over and over that BP will be responsible for all costs but federal law limits their liability to only $75,000,000 while project cleanup costs are over $5 billion not including additional liabilities.
On CNN today they said they have a way to close the well but BP won’t do it because they would lose the well permanently. Well who cares? Just drill a new one. Our politicians need to stand up and take action.
—- !!!! Update !!!!! —-
Apparently, a reader of my blog submitted this post to NPR and asked if they could verify or come up with an estimate on the amount of oil.
Low and below, NPR has confirmed through scientific analysis that 60,000 barrels of oil are leaking into the Gulf of Mexico every days.
That is equal to one Exxon-Valdez oil spill leaking into the Gulf of Mexico every 4 days.

I linked to one above before the spill and one 6 days after the spill.
For example, http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/subsets/?subset=AERONET_WaveCIS_Site_CSI_6.2010115.terra.1km is the satellite image from 4/26… no “silt”.

You can actually go the NASA link in the post an browse through images by date.
Also see my latest post which PROVES NOAA is under reporting the size of the spill.

Tim,
Those photos are absolutely wrong.
See satellite images here http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2010/05/06/video-oil-spill-spread-entire-gulf/
It is clear that oil is entering the mobile bay. There is also a Bloom berg reported who did an overflight (VIDEO) included stating the oil sheen is visible only 8 miles from the coast.
Perhaps we are confusing the “black tide” and actual oil. To me, if there is a sheen of oil from the spill then that is the extent of the spill. It seems that only the thick “slick” is being counted in those photos.

This is a catastrophe of epic proportions. This is an emergency and the White House is not responding. This could literally kill the gulf of Mexico. The White House should have mobilized experts to come up with a way of stopping this leak. BP can't pay for all the damage that this has caused. BP is done, and will go bankrupt. The cost of containing, and cleaning this up (if it is even possible to do so) will far exceed BP's capacity to pay. This White House has sat on its hands and has not taken this seriously.

What kind of morons do they take us for, hey lets show the american people all the workers in chemical outfits and clear plastic bags doing a bang up job of cleaning this catastrophy up when not in a single picture i see an outfit or a plastic bag with a drop of oil on them. Just seems kind of funnY that they would show a bunch of clean workers with not a spot of oil on them. Just makes you wonder what is realy going on. inquiring minds want to know.
Hello there is a great company called planet resource to fix the problem there is a frrat animation of correcting this
Scientist say the best way to clean up the oil is to just scoop it up. I would like to see a couple of dredges suck up infected water – filter it and release clean filtered water. A boat fleet 2 years that can work on the oil pollution skimming the water. Like a water plant dedicated and chemically engineered to separate the water and oil pumped threw the barge.
Finally: Close this well for good. Let the clean-up begin.

Well we would not be going through this crisis if Bush got the acoustic switch system. The acoustic switch system is a switch that blows out the bottom of the catism in other words it stops the oil exactly from the source. Bush told the companies like BP that we have a new policy its the " Close Door Dick Chenney Policy. That Dick Chenney program allow the industry to bypass safe systems. He felt there was no need to spend 500,000 dollars on the switch.
Scientist say the best way to clean up the oil is to just scoop it up. I would call on the U.S. Navy to setup some oil filter technology on about 100 U.S. Navy Ships with tank barges to pump the oil to. I understand the oil filter pumps do exist in real life and are ready and able to separate the oil from the water.
Time is of the essence we need an emergency plan of action now. The well should be shut down. If BP wants to suck up some more oil they should do so from the water now in the month of June. It may be to late to save millions of wild life and mass fish kills.
I envision a future where filter stations are set up in harbors around the world to filter oil out of the water. Like air-raters in ponds to support the ecosystem.
We need to support the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem now with an emergency naval action. So I would like to see a naval commander take control of the fleet and help protect the U.S. waters with military action. Man and boat power.
A boat fleet to work on the oil pollution skimming the water. Not perfect but an emergency plan of action.

It's "Lo and Behold" not "low and below", silly.
edit, "can't" be shut.
“Finally: Close this well for good. Let the clean-up begin.”
IT cant be shut. If it is, the casing further down in the well will burst, potentially rupturing the whole well and releasing potentially billions of gallons of oil an d methane at once.

It's more serious!
teh Feds are lying!
Try more like ONE MILLION Gallons a day!
This horrible so called oil spill is an ELE and can harm millions of humans.
The toxic gases being lifted into rainfall, will have drastic after effects in health dangers for those in Florida, Luisianna, Alabama, and Mexico. It will travel north and effect North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Ohio, onward to Pennsylvania, New York, etc. It can cause dangerous sickness in thousands, if not more.
This is also the fault of the pathetic national government we are now experiencing.
BP is the major cause, but, our Federal Government is equally guilty.
Senator Bill Nelson, Florida is watching all that occurs, closely. But, few other elected officials are showing little interest so far.
Remember them in November.
Terrible tragedy, especially for the “Small People” as BP CEO put it so well!
Is BP doing all to help?

If this picture should be the proof – poor guys, you will believe everything.
Obama was told yesterday that it’s more like 160,000 barrels a day, which would be 6.7 mil gals per day. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE66K3PD20100721
however, under sworn testimony last week, gov official admitted to 420-840 MIL and 1:10 ratio of dispersant.
So more than likely we’re looking at 1 BILLION gals of oil and 100 MIL gals of Corexit. Ouuuuccchhhh!!
